Glossary for the Wild Tongues: Performative reading and publication launch with Valerie Tee Lee & Emma Bang

Atletika gallery is pleased to invite to the launch event of the publication Glossary for the Wild Tongues by Valerie Tee Lee and Emma Bang, taking place on Saturday 29 July 2023, 4 pm, on the last day of their same-titled exhibition at Atletika gallery. The event will feature performative reading of the publication extracts by the artists.

The artists listen intently, allowing the words to leak, soak, and rewrite while patching and playing with boundaries. This transformative journey intertwines speculative fiction and poetry, embracing the sour and bitter tongues of Medusa, Katla, and Masako. Through their artistic expression, they endeavor to rewrite the very essence of the glossary, capturing the transformative nature of female figures as they delve into monstrosity.

Together the artists have developed a process of sewing, cooking and (re)writing as an alternative way of (embodied) knowledge production and (un)learning feminist pedagogy. This exhibition is the first presentation of the creative practices of Valerie Tee Lee and Emma Bang working as a duo, after they first met in Lithuania in 2021 as both participants of the 9th edition of the Alternative Education Programme at Rupert Residency. Since then, an enchanting dialogue and an intricate interweaving of thoughts have blossomed.

Valerie Tee Lee (b. 1995, KR/BE) is an artist working across performance, text, and communal (care) practices. Inspired by feminist pedagogy, her research-based performance and installation practice explores situated and embodied knowledge production, amplifying subaltern voices and silenced narratives. Lee has participated in several residencies and exhibitions, including Rupert (LT), Podium (NO), M4 gastatelier (NL), P////AKT (NL), and Sim (IS). She holds a BFA from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, and currently resides in Brussels.

Emma Bang (b. 1989, DK/UK) is a Danish artist working with hand-dyed fabrics, narrative poetry and soft sculptures. Her works engage with the poetics of the everyday, questioning the distinction between the self and the other through slow sensing and deep listening in a quest of (un)-recovering embodied knowledge. She completed her MA in Fine Art at The Royal College of Art in London in 2019. She is currently taking part in the Fabrikken for Kunst and Design two-year studio programme. Bang’s work has been presented at Rupert, (LT), Podium (NO), Lewisham Art House (UK), Galeri Golsa (NO), Galleri Tom Christoffersen (DK) and Robert Burt Gallery (UK) among many others.
